Structural phase transition and Tc distribution in Hf-doped LaMnO3 investigated using perturbed-angular-correlation spectroscopy.

چکیده
Using perturbed-angular-correlation ~PAC! spectroscopy, via the Hf→Ta probe, we have measured Mn-site electric-field gradients ~EFG’s! at Ta nuclei in ceramic samples of LaMnO3. Two crystallographic phases coexist over a temperature interval of '16 K near the orthorhombic-to-rhombohedral transition at '724 K, which shows a thermal hysteresis of '1.760.2 K. Concurrently, in the two phases, we determined the temperature dependence of the EFG parameters, Vzz , h , and d , and the ratio of the probe concentrations A1 /A2. To explain the apparent coexistence of two phases in this weakly first-order transition, we present a model that assumes a spatial distribution of Tc values. This distribution could arise from a spatially nonuniform distribution of Mn ions. We show the PAC technique to be a uniquely powerful probe of local symmetries that reflect the effects of a local distribution of valences, which drive the phase transition. @S0163-1829~96!52230-7#

Phase Transitions in Oxides Studied by Perturbed Angular Correlation Spectroscopy
Radioactive atoms located on cation sites in oxide matrices can be used to monitor phase transitions by measuring the electric or magnetic hyperfine interactions by means of Perturbed Angular Correlations spectroscopy. The article illustrates three types of phase transitions studied with 'in tracers and their daughter nuclei m C d , namely magnetic, structural and REDOX phase transitions in bin...
متن کاملCharacterizing Phase Transitions in the Perovskites PbTi0
Perturbed-angular-correlation (PAC) spectroscopy was used to measure in ceramic samples of PbTi0 3 and B a T i 0 3 the temperature dependence of the Ti-site electric-field gradients (EFGs) at temperatures very close to the ferroelectric-to-paraelectric transition temperatures Tc. The samples were doped with small amounts of Hf that carried the 181 Hf — l 8 l Ta probe radioactivity. A highfreque...

In this work, the strontium-doped lanthanum manganite- a ceramic material- used as cathode in solid oxide fuel cells. An impression of grinding time on the structural and thermal properties of Sr-doped LaMnO3 system with La1-xSrxMnO3 (x=0.2) stoichiometric ratio was investigated. The nano crystallite LSM powder with cubic structure was prepared by varying the milling time of planetary monomill ...

Gamma radiation induced changes in local structure around the probe atom (Hafnium) were investigated in sodium barium borosilicate (NBS) glass, used for immobilization of high level liquid waste generated from the reprocessing plant at Trombay, Mumbai. The (NBS) glass was doped with 181Hf as a probe for time differential perturbed angular correlation (TDPAC) spectroscopy studies, while for stud...
متن کاملBandwidth-driven nature of the pressure-induced metal state of LaMnO3
Using X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS), we studied the local structure in LaMnO3 under applied pressure across and well above the insulator-to-metal (IM) transition. A hysteretic behavior points to the coexistence of two phases within a large pressure range (7 to 25GPa). The ambient phase with highly Jahn-Teller (JT) distorted MnO6 octahedra is progressively substituted by a new phase with l...
